Barbera is the most planted grape in Piedmont and is planted in two primary growing locales - Asti, and Alba. The Asti version is usually lighter and more vividly etched with acidity than the fuller, fleshier Alba counterpart. Palladino Barbera d’Alba Superiore is a great example of the rounder, supple offerings from Alba. This wine is wonderfully smooth as a result of 12 months aging in Slavonian oak barrels & oozes ripe black cherries, blueberries and raspberry puree, layered with violets, earth & plum skins. With a few years on it already, the tannins are fully tamed, but still elegantly insinuating. It’s one of the best, most affordable wines from Piedmont you could hope to find. Try it with some fat-rich cuisine and rejoice in the exultantly straightforward flavor of the wine. It’ll cut through fog and is sure to please.
