Valtellina Superiore DOCG is one of the few wine areas in Lombardy’s northern Alps, on these slopes the courtyards arranged in the terraces remain an ancient and functional system that has made the current Valtellina viticulture possible, one of the largest terraced mountain areas in Europe. The region’s claim to fame is Chiavennasca, the local name for various ancient clones of Piedmont’s famed Nebbiolo grape. The wine is a lively ruby red, with raspberries, strawberries and currants, notes of sweet spices and hints of leather. On the palate, it reveals smooth tannin texture and long persistence.
